Tim Bresnan has told his England teammates to maintain the standard they’ve set for themselves when they face Australia in the third of five one-day internationals on Sunday.

England are 2-0 up against the world champions and victory at Old Trafford would give them an unbeatable lead. But Bresnan, a member of the England team that beat Australia in last month’s World Twenty20 final in Barbados, told reporters here on Saturday: “We haven’t achieved anything yet. We’ve still got a lot of hard work to do.”

The Yorkshire seamer added: “There’s three games left and we’d like to wrap it up in style. There’s a lot of confidence about, the guys are playing well, dovetailing quite nicely and that’s how you win cricket matches as a team.

“We’re certainly a confident side but we’re ever improving. We’re looking to improve every day and as long as we keep doing that we should win more than we lose.” But with England holding the Ashes, as well as the World Twenty20, Bresnan knows Australia will be desperate to avoid losing a one-day series to their oldest rivals as well.

“They’re definitely going to come hard at us tomorrow,” he said. “We’ve obviously played some good cricket, stopped them playing as well as they can. That’s what we set out to do and we’ve done that well. All we need to do is do that for another three games and hopefully we’ll get a positive result.”

Bresnan was doubtful for this series with a foot injury but insisted he was now completely fit. “It’s fully okay, 100 per cent fit, it’s holding up well. The medical staff did a marvellous job with it. I’m really pleased.”

England have looked sharp in the field with captain Andrew Strauss enjoying a tactical triumph in Thursday’s four-wicket win in Cardiff when Michael Clarke was caught at short leg just a few balls after Graeme Swann was stationed there. “It was just inspirational captaincy – and that’s what Straussy brings,” Bresnan said.

“He’s done unbelievably in the last two games, and I’m sure he’ll continue to do that. We’re not ahead of the thinking – it’s quite easy to just bowl a ‘cross-seamer’. It’s where you bowl it, and what situation you bowl it in.

Flying high after the upset win over India, minnows Zimbabwe will look to spring another surprise when they take on Sri Lanka in the third ODI of the cricket tri-series here on Tuesday.

Both the sides have played a match each — against India — and have contrasting results to show going into Tuesday’s game. While Zimbabwe stunned India with a six-wicket triumph, the Lankans suffered a seven-wicket loss on Sunday.

The contrast is evident in the batting line-ups of both the sides as well. While Sri Lanka’s batting, barring skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan and Angelo Mathews, was largely lackluster against India, the Zimbabweans chased down a rather stiff 285 with consummate ease. Without regular stars like Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s bating looked brittle against India and three run-outs didn’t help their cause either.

And if the Lankans have to avoid the embarrassment that India endured, their batting would be crucial and the likes of Thilan Samaraweera and Upul Tharanga will have to strike form. On the bowling front, the Lankans have a decent line-up with Nuwan Kulasekara and Dilhara Fernando heading the pace department although the latter leaked too many runs against India.

The Zimbabweans, on the other hand, had good day with the bat against India. Craig Ervine and Brendon Taylor notched up half-centuries while the rest of the top half also made important contributions to the successful chase. The bowling, however, was lackluster. As many as seven bowlers were used against India but only two of them were among the wickets, that too after giving away far too many runs.

West Indies vs South Africa, 3rd ODI Match, Windsor Park, Roseau, On May 27, 2010 from 13:30 GMT | 19:00 IST Onwards

The third ODI between West Indies and South Africa will be played at Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica. South Africa leads the series 2-0 and a win here will give them the series. West Indies, on the other hand, need to get going with a win under their belt, after having lost two successive T20is and now, the two ODIs.

West Indies managed to shoot themselves in the foot by electing to field first in the first ODI. It was evident that their bowling struggled in the first innings, and this was followed by the second ODI in which the side lost the toss and were again, grinded to the ground as South Africa got to 300.

The West Indian side will need to now, come what may, bat first if they win the toss and this is despite the fact that the game is a day game at Dominica. West Indies will also need to ensure that once they win the toss and elect to bat first in this game, they end up batting as well as they did in the second ODI. Of course, they were assisted by a whirlwind of an innings by Darren Sammy, but what is now required by the hosts is for the top-order to get going.

Chris Gayle has often got the starts, but has failed to convert them into anything meaningful. Then again, various openers have been tried, to partner him, including Andre Fletcher, Dale Richards and even Chanderpaul, but most of them have failed and hence the troubles have compounded. Richards did have a good start in the series with a half century, but whether he will be able to do that again in the third game, and at a healthier strike-rate is a question mark.

South Africa look to have gone into the series with a one-point agenda of winning all the games, but if they were to look at their bowling in the previous game, they will realise that the old problems were back to haunt them. The runs were conceded rather easily in the end, despite the fact that the side had already lost most of their wickets and that meant that the team was in strife for some part of the innings.

However, the likes of Ryan McLaren and Morne Morkel need to continue bowling in the manner that they have been so far, and hope that Hashim Amla’s form continues to bail them out of trouble.
